18 / LOMBARDPARKS W A T E R P A R K LOMBARD WAVES SWIM TEAM Coach: Pam Forsberg Practice Location: Paradise Bay Water Park The Lombard Park District Waves Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. The Waves coaching staff focus on building swimmer skills, teamwork, enjoyment of the sport, and participation in competitive swimming. We challenge each swimmer and develop them to the best of their abilities. We compete in dual swim meets every week during the swim team summer season. Meets are held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings in June and July. Parent volunteers are required to work at "Home" swim meets. Often times, parent volunteers are needed for "Away" meets as well. Parents can sign up to volunteer at parent meetings and at the start of the season via our online portal at LombardWaves.com. Team suits, team swim caps and goggles are required, and are available for purchase prior to the start of the season. This is not a Learn to Swim program. For swimmers not ready for Swim Team, please sign up for the Lombard Swim School. Contact coach Pam Forsberg at 2fors8@gmail.com. SWIMMER TEST/TRYOUTS New and returning swimmers to the team will be required to attend a swim test date. Swimmers will need to swim a minimum of 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke. Children ages 9 and up will need to be able to swim a minimum of 50 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Testing will be in May 2020. Contact Pam Forsberg at 2fors8@gmail.com. AGE GROUPS Ages 8 & Under: Our swimmers should be able to swim one length of the pool freestyle and backstroke. They compete in 25-yard events of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle as well as 50 freestyle and team relays. We will focus on building proper technique in backstroke and freestyle and learning all four strokes along with dives and flip-turns. Our more advanced 8 year olds will also be pushed to learn a legal individual medley as well as building on their endurance. Each 8 & under will be paired with a Waves Swim Buddy. Ages 9-10: Our athletes in this group will focus on swimming all four competitive strokes efficiently and legally. They all work toward swimming a legal 100 individual medley within the season. They compete in 50 yard events of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle as well as 100 freestyle, 100 IM and team relays. They will be working to build endurance, perfecting their stroke technique, starts and turns. Having fun together is also a priority. Ages 11-12: Our athletes will be building up their training endurance. They compete in 50 yard events of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle as well as 100 freestyle, 100 IM and team relays. Their practices will also include technique work to improve their strokes, turns and racing starts. They will be placed in groups by ability and all will work toward efficiently swimming 100 IM. Ages 13-14 & 15+: The 13-14 and 15+ age groups train together and are grouped by ability. They also compete in 50 yard events of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle as well as 100 freestyle, 100 IM and team relays. Athletes entering this group must display a desire to begin training on a more committed basis. Training will have a greater emphasis over technique work for the first time in the swimmer's development. However, we will continue to work technique building into our sets. We will write goals, play games and each swimmer will be given a Waves Swim Buddy to support and cheer for at meets. DIVE TEAM (Grades 1-12) Coach: Payton Esposito Practice Location: Paradise Bay Water Park Divers looking for exciting competition are invited to join the Lombard Dive Team. The Waves diving coaches focus on building competitive dive skills, teamwork, enjoyment of the sport and participation in competitive dive.
