Lombard Park District 22 Chapter Two Natural Resources Creeks and Rivers The Park District is located just east of the East Branch of the DuPage River. The DuPage River drains into the Des Plaines River which then connects to the Illinois River. Flood Plain The Federal Emergency Management Agency through the National Flood Insurance Program produces Flood Hazard Boundary maps for areas prone to fl ood hazards. The 100-year fl ood plain associated with each of the creeks is shown in blue on the Natural Resource Map. The 100-year fl ood plain denotes the area of fl ood water expected to be equaled or exceeded every 100 years on average, or has a 1% chance of being equaled or exceeded in any single year. Watersheds The Park District is within the DuPage River Watershed which is located within the Des Plaines River Watershed. The Des Plaines River Watershed is part of the larger Illinois River Watershed. Wetlands Wetlands are lands saturated with water. This saturation impacts the soil character, the plant and animal communities, and the surface condition of the land. Wetland data from the National Wetlands Inventory conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is depicted in the Natural Resources Map. Several types of wetlands have been identifi ed within in the Park District planning area- freshwater emergent wetland, freshwater forested/shrub wetland, freshwater pond, lake, and riverine. The areas in and around the Park District feature mainly freshwater emergent and freshwater forested wetlands, both located along the Eastern Branch of the DuPage River. Many of the Park District's properties are wetlands or contain wetlands. These include Broadview Slough, Terrace View Park, and Madison Meadow Park. The district also has a high number of freshwater ponds and constructed detention basins. These wetlands form a Riverine System, which are typically higher quality wetlands found adjacent to larger waterways such as creeks or rivers. Wetlands are regulated under the Clean Water Act by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Western Acres Golf Course Broadview Slough Lombard Lagoon Terrace View Park
