Bachrach served as historian for the Chicago Park District for 28 years and co-authored the 2018 Section 106 Historic Properties Report for Federal Undertakings in and Adjacent to Jackson Park Cook County, Illinois. The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition was one of the most important events in Chicago and American history. Renowned landscape architects transformed Jackson Park on the Southside into the famous White City fairgrounds. As told in Erik Larson's best-selling book, Devil in the White City, while millions of visitors enjoyed the World's Fair, a murderer who called himself Dr. Henry Howard Holmes lured young women wanting to visit or work at the fair to stay at his nearby hotel. On this tour, participants will explore sites related to both the White City and the devil. Lunch location is TBD. Our guide will provide an overview of the city, focusing on different neighborhoods' background and showing us the current revitalization progress. We'll visit Walker's Point, Historic Third Ward, East Town, Old World Third Street, Lincoln Village, Brady Street and North Shore. We'll enjoy the culinary treats that define each neighborhood - from chocolate, cheese, cannoli and custard to bakery, beer, bratwurst and brandy. Everyone will receive a goodie bag and to be filled as we tour the city. We'll also stop for a Polish family-style lunch at Polonez featuring pierogi, potato pancakes and polish sausage. Bring your appetite for an educational and fun-filled day in Milwaukee! Online portion of class must be completed before class and is a two-year certification. Course fee includes online access to digital version of manual and refresher course. Since 1979, the course has helped more than 15 million drivers learn research-based tips to adapt their driv- ing to compensate for physical and cognitive changes that may occur with aging. Plus, you may qualify for a multi- year automobile insurance discount by completing the course (check with your auto insurance agent for details).
