(Ages 7-16) Actors in grades 3-8 will work together to create quality, age appropriate productions suitable for family viewing. Auditions are required in order to be a part of the cast. This will allow us to assess the comfort level of children as performers, evaluate their skills and find the role that will best suit their personality and talent. There is no cost to audition. Children will be seen in small groups during their audition time slot. They will be asked to sing 16 bars (measures of music) of a musical theatre song, to learn a short dance with their group and perform it, and possibly to read short scenes from the script (called sides). They will fill out a short audition form listing their possible conflicts and any previous experience, and will have a digital photograph taken for the artistic staff's reference during casting. Casting will be based on availability, ability and attitude. Cast members will be enrolled in the program as a class and must pay a participation fee. This fee covers professional instruction throughout the process, a copy of the script which performers may keep, a cast t-shirt and all production costs. When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right. Disney's Newsies Jr. is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn of the century New York City. Newsies Jr. features a Tony Award winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. PROGRAM MANAGER: PATTI PLOMB | pplomb@lombardparks.com
