Winter 2016 Activity Guide | 43 SOLAR SYSTEM AND BEYOND (Ages 8-12) Look up at the sky at night and what do you see? If it is the right season and time, you might see Venus or Mars! In this class we will make a 3 dimensional puzzle of our solar system, complete a planet scavenger hunt, and make a model of our universe. Participants will make a working submarine, learn how to submerge your submarine and then refloat it, learn what buoyancy is, and learn how submarines work. We will decode messages using Navy code and each participant will have a flag parade and send messages using signal flags. Participants will then be able to take their submarine and signal flag home! Students will learn about recent research to make things invisible just like Harry Potter's cloak, how light is important and learn what light is and how it is different than other things around us. Students will find answers to these questions and they will be able to explain how things disappear in the "little magic box." It's a safe place to hang out with your friends and participate in a variety of organized athletics! Staff is available to organize, facilitate and participate in the activities. All participants must stay until Open Gym is over unless previously arranged with parent and staff. No one will be released early unless a parent/ guardian enters the building. On-line portion of class must be completed before class and is a two year certification. Course fee includes on-line access to digital version of manual and refresher course. Both new and returning participants will get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. No previous knowledge of chess is necessary; players of all levels are welcome. Children will have an opportunity to test for a Chess Belt® under a unique Chess Scholars system patterned after martial arts belts. There will also be a chess competition with prizes at the end of the session!
