Spring 2016 Activity Guide | 43 STRATEGY FOR KIDS (Ages 7-11) This class is an exciting opportunity for your child to develop logic, problem solving, and planning skills. Every class, each child will learn two or three new skill-based games (no luck or chance involved). Both team and individual games will be played. There will also be a tournament with prizes! In Amigos Spanish Club children will learn numbers, colors, shapes, greetings, days of the week, and more. We will be singing, clapping, and counting our way towards learning the Spanish language. Amaze family and friends with tricks that involve cards, ropes, coins, mindreading, and more. While the tricks may appear difficult, you'll discover that they are quick to learn and easy to perform. All materials are provided; each child receives a magic kit to take home. Children are grouped by age and always learn tricks that are age appropriate. New tricks are taught each session. Instructor: Gary Kantor Location: Iowa Community Center Code Day Date Time R/NR Fee 107103-01 Th 05/05 4:00 - 4:55 pm $20/$25 FIRST AID, ADULT PEDIATRIC CPR , & AED CERTIFICATION (Ages 12 +) Learn to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac and breathing emergencies, and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, head, and cold. On-line portion of class must be completed before class and is a two year certification. Course fee includes on-line access to a digital manual and refresher course. Each class will consist of a fun interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both new returning participants will get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. Children will have the opportunity to test for a Chess Belt under a unique Chess Scholars system patterned after matial arts belts. There will also be a chess competition with prizes at the end of the session! In Stage Stars children will learn theater terms, play games, and act in short skits. During theater games, students will use their creativity to communicate and improvise. The carefully selected skits are based on folk tales that teach cooperation and positive moral values. Every student will have the opportunity to play at least one lead role per session. Also, Stage Stars participants can earn prizes for identifying and explaining parts of a skit and goals of the characters. Each child will receive a participation award. Parents are invited to attend the final performance on the last day of class! Refund requests must be received three days prior to activity. Instructor: After School Enrichment Solutions Location: Sunset Knoll Recreation Center Code Day Date Time R/NR Fee 107111-01 W 04/13 - 05/18 6:00 - 7:00 pm $93/$103 CREATE & ANIMATE WITH SCRATCH 2 (Ages 8-12) Students will learn the fundamentals involved in creating a video game world, using Scratch 2, the innovative programming language created just for kids by MIT. In this class, students will be introduced to programming by creating and editing sprites and game opponents. They will learn about sound and video as they "level up" through the building of their own game. Students work in teams and will receive a copy of the software and their game at the end of class.
